WTA commissioned a Microtransit Feasibility Study to evaluate the potential performance of microtransit service in different areas within WTA’s service boundaries and to identify recommended operations and technology features. The potential microtransit service zones were not evaluated in comparison to fixed-route services or other modes, but only with respect to potential microtransit service implementation (including the reduction or revision of relevant fixed-route services within the zone, where applicable).
After an initial screening process, nine zones were chosen for evaluation. Zones were evaluated according to projected ridership and other performance measures that reflect WTA’s goals for microtransit service: 1) Improve accessibility, 2) Integrate with the transit network, 3) Efficient service delivery, and 4) Service equality. Three zones scored significantly higher than the other six zones; the Lynden, Ferndale, and Blaine / Birch Bay zones have the three highest scores, and this study recommends that these three zones be prioritized for future consideration.
