The MCAG Short Range Transit Plan comprehensively reviewed all transit service provided in Merced County, CA. Merced is primarily an agricultural county that includes the newest University of California campus and has experienced considerable population growth driven by individuals seeking more affordable housing compared to Silicon Valley. The Merced County transit system consists of nine urban routes in the cities of Merced and Atwater, seven intercity routes connecting the communities of Merced County, and microtransit and deviated fixed-route service in smaller communities. Components of the plan included a complete examination of service delivery to accommodate growth and post-Covid travel behavior, establishing bus stop standards and model agreements with municipalities, a marketing plan, a plan for conversion to zero-emission buses, a financial plan and examining consolidation or improved coordination with the UC Merced transit system.
