Great article about how new data is informing the development of our recommendations for the LA Metro bus network as part of the NextGen project. Travel patterns extracted from cell phone and smart card use are dismantling our preconceived notions about how and when people travel. Transit traditionally focuses on serving journey to work trips as it’s often the longest and most regular trip people make, but commute trips represent only a small part of all trip-making. There is great opportunity to make transit more attractive for shorter distance trips by prioritizing frequency and access, using the new data that’s available to us to redesign service to best meet people’s travel needs. We look forward to continuing this exciting work with Metro on such a transformative project.
