LA Metro NextGen Bus Study

TMD redesigned Los Angeles County’s bus network through the NextGen Bus Plan. This three-year project was the first comprehensive look at Metro’s fixed-route network in over 25 years. On October 22, 2020, the Metro Board of Directors approved the plan, moving it forward for implementation starting in December 2020. The final plan nearly doubles the number of routes operating every 5-10 minutes, greatly expands service on evenings and weekends, and improves travel times by reducing delay and increasing operating speeds. It also combines most overlapping Rapid and Local lines into single enhanced bus services with better frequencies. The number of residents within walking distance of 5-10 minute service will more than double from 900,000 to 2.2 million. This was an incredibly exciting project to be part of, and we look forward to continuing to work with Metro as the project moves through to implementation.

Conan Cheung, Senior Executive Officer, LA Metro: “Thank you [TMD] for tremendous work partnering with us…to redraw the lines on the map. This is the largest bus network redesign in the country, and the most ambitious, and we were able to pull it off with very little push back by the time it reached Ops Committee and the Board.”
