Eamon Johnston recently returned to his hometown of San Diego to join TMD. He recently worked at the Shasta Regional Transportation Agency (SRTA), the metropolitan planning organization for Shasta County. At SRTA, he led a broad range of planning projects focused on improving mobility for people and reducing the environmental impact of travel in a low-density region. He managed SRTA’s state and federal public transit grants, which included writing a successful application to envision the future of multimodal intercity transportation across Northern California, and planned the relaunch of a bus service to expand free access to nature and outdoor recreation. His work also involved assisting with a microtransit pilot project, designing messaging campaigns on SRTA’s social media accounts, and representing the agency at meetings of the SRTA Board of Directors and on multiple regional councils. Prior to his time at SRTA, he spent three years in Medellín, Colombia, studying and working in education, GIS, and bicycle advocacy. In his graduate program there, he learned how to develop and present spatial data for mapping projects and studied the fundamentals of transportation planning in the context of a large, mountainous Latin American city. He feels lucky to work in a field that is key to encouraging regional accessibility, reducing socioeconomic disparities, and mitigating the effects of climate change.
